The Terai Community and National Integration in Nepal – Hari Bansh Jha | Hari Bansh Jha (63) obtained his M.A. degree in Economics from Banaras Hindu University (1975) and Ph.D. from University of Bihar (1982) in India. He was Professor of Economics at Nepal’s Tribhuvan University and taught there for 23 years between 1976 and 1998. Since 1989, he has been Executive Director of a research organization, Centre for Economic and Technical Studies, in Kathmandu, Nepal. Currently, he is Visiting Scholar at Indian Council of World Affairs, Sapru House, New Delhi. Previously, he was Visiting Professor of Fairley Dickinson University, USA and taught economics at Chengdu American Center for Study Abroad, Sichuan University, Chengdu (China) in 2013. In 2011-12, he was senior ICCR Fellow at Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, New Delhi. Besides, he was Visiting Scholar at Institute of Asian Studies, German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in Hamburg, Germany in 2011. His areas of interest include Nepal, China, India and South Asian affairs. Over the years, he worked on diverse strategic issues, border problems, conflict and peace, international migration, child labour, human trafficking, agriculture, international trade, micro-financing, Dalit (untouchable), Janajati (indigenous) and Madhesi (Terai) communities of Nepal. He worked in dozens of research projects, which were sponsored mostly by the international organizations like the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, USAID, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (Germany), GTZ (Germany), JICA (Japan), Plan International, World Vision, Danida and B.P. Koirala India-Nepal Foundation. Also, he worked in different research projects sponsored by the United Nations agencies, including UNDP, UNCTAD, UNCEF, ILO/IPEC, UNCDF, FAO, WHO and IOM. He has authored/edited 27 books on national and international affairs. Also, he has published several articles in research journals in and out of the country. His articles are published in important websites and national dailies on a regular basis.
