Queens Of The Shah Dynasty – Prakash A. Raj | The unification of Nepal was started by kings of the Shah dynasty of the small principality of Gorkha in the year 1768 when Kathmandu was conquered. Many queens and queen mothers in the Shah dynasty in Nepal in the period 1775?1846 were very powerful and played a crucial role in shaping the history of the country. One such queen was Rajendra Laxmi under whose regency the frontiers of Nepal extended from Chepe westward to Kali Gandaki.Another one was Rajya Laxmi who was responsible for starting the infamous Kot Massacre which transferred the actual power to the Rana family and the monarchs remained mere figureheads for over a century. On the other hand, some were forced to perform SATI at the funeral pyre of their dead kings. In one such case such Sati was performed one week after the King had already died and cremated. At least one of the queens was widowed at an age of twelve. The King in the beginning of the twentieth century had married four queens including two who were daughters of the Rana Prime Minister. This historical account written by well known travel writer of Nepal provides an authentic account of the period.
