Gyan Udas was born and brought up in the lovely hill town of Chainpur in eastern Nepal. He is a poet par excellence. He has written long and short poems including what is called muktak, a short form of poetry. Udas started writing poetry from the early sixties. He gave continuity to his writing in the following times. The diversity of themes is one special feature of Udas’s writing. He writes on themes that are familiar, and simple but profound in significance. He writes about human nature and relationships. In his poems poet Udas shows that every person, man or woman has the creative potentialities. A poet should show those potentialities in his/her poetry. To poet Udas nature and time are important elements that shape human existence. He shows that in his choice of imageries and descriptions of small but important events in life. Autobiographical feature of his poetry comes out clearly in the contexts and events that he depicts in his writing. Udas is a social worker and an advocate of the concept of equality, cooperation and humanism.
